Erinn B. Broshko, M.A., LL.B., M.B.A
Chief Executive Officer and Director

Erinn B. Broshko has been MBI's Chief Executive Officer since May 2006. Prior to joining MBI, Mr. Broshko was a corporate and securities lawyer with the Vancouver law firm of Farris, Vaughan, Wills & Murphy LLP. Mr. Broshko’s legal practice was focussed primarily on biotechnology companies and he represented clients in corporate transactions totalling in excess of $2.2 billion.

Mr. Broshko holds a B.A. (hons) and M.A. from the University of Saskatchewan, an LL.B. from Dalhousie Law School and an M.B.A. from the University of British Columbia.

David G. Matthews, M.B.A., C.M.A.
Chief Financial Officer

David G. Matthews has been MBI's Chief Financial Officer since March 2009.  Immediately prior to joining MBI, Mr. Matthews was a Director of BMO Capital Corporation, a subsidiary of Bank of Montreal providing mezzanine financing and equity capital to Canadian mid-market companies.  Prior to that, Mr. Matthews was the Managing Director of Aspreva Pharmaceuticals SA, the European subsidiary of Aspreva Pharmaceuticals Corporation (NASDAQ: ASPV; TSX: ASV), which was acquired in 2007 by Galenica Group (SWX: GALN) for US$915 million.  Prior to joining Aspreva, Mr. Matthews was the Chief Financial Officer of StressGen Biotechnologies Corp. (now Nventa Biopharmaceuticals Corporation; TSX:NVN) and Allelix Biopharmaceuticals Inc. (TSX: AXB), which was acquired in 1998 by NPS Pharmaceuticals for $60 million.

Mr. Matthews holds an M.B.A. from Clarkson University and is a Certified Management Accountant.

John H. Rayson, M.D.
Chairman of the Board

John H. Rayson has been a director of MBI since 2004.  Dr. Rayson practiced family medicine for 27 years before joining MDS Metro Laboratory Services in 1994 as President and Chief Executive Officer, a position he held until 2001 when he became Chief Executive Officer and Executive Vice Chairman.  Dr. Rayson retired as CEO in June 2006 but continues as Executive Vice Chairman.  MDS Metro Laboratory Services is part of the diagnostics division of MDS Inc. (TSX: MDS; NYSE: MDZ).

Dr. Rayson holds an M.D. from the University of Manitoba.

Bruce G. Cousins, C.A.

Bruce G. Cousins has been a director of MBI since May 2006.  Mr. Cousins is the Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Ballard Power Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:  BLDP; TSX: BLD).  From June 2008 to September 2008, Mr. Cousins was the Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Xantrex Technologies Inc. (TSX:XTX), which was acquired in 2008 by Schneider Electric S.A. for US $500 million.  Prior to that, he was Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Aspreva Pharmaceuticals Corporation (NASDAQ: ASPV; TSX: ASV), which acquired in 2007 by Galenica Group for US $915 million, and the World Wide Financial Director for Johnson & Johnson's (NYSE:JNJ) Wound Management Division.  Prior to entering the pharmaceutical industry, Mr. Cousins was a chartered accountant with Deloitte & Touche.

Mr. Cousins holds a B.Com. from McMaster University.

Heiner Dreismann, Ph.D.

Heiner Dreismann, Ph.D., has been a director of MBI and the chair MBI’s Strategy Committee since May 2008.  Dr. Dreismann is the former Chief Executive Officer of Roche Molecular Diagnostics (Roche), a division of F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd.

Roche pioneered the clinical implementation of molecular diagnostics. While at Roche, Dr. Dreismann led the introduction in Europe of the company’s PCR (polymerase chain reaction) and, now industry-standard, real-time PCR-based tests.  PCR is a Nobel-prize winning technology which has been recognized as one of the most important scientific developments of our generation.  PCR allows scientists to copy a single segment of DNA billions of times, making it possible to take a specimen, copy its genetic sequence, and, within hours, generate a test sample sufficient to perform a detailed analysis of a specific genetic question.

Under Dr. Dreismann’s leadership as Chief Executive Officer, Roche evolved into one of the world’s leading molecular diagnostics companies with annual sales to over US $1 billion and the significant expansion of their portfolio of diagnostic tests and hardware. Prior to his appointment as Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Dreismann held other senior positions within Roche in the areas of Global Business Development, Business Unit Manager for PCR and Microbiology, as well as R&D positions in microbiology and infectious diseases and in manufacturing.

Dr. Dreismann holds a Masters Degree in Biology and a Ph.D. in Microbiology/Molecular Biology from Westfaelische Wilhelms University in Muenster, Germany.

Dennis L. Grimaud

Dennis L. Grimaud has been a director of MBI since February 2008.  Mr. Grimaud has over 30 years of experience in the health care industry and over 18 years of experience in biotechnology and molecular diagnostics as an entrepreneur, senior executive and consultant.  Mr. Grimaud is currently the Chief Executive Officer of Theragnostix Reference Laboratories Inc., an innovative clinical laboratory providing diagnostic services for infectious disease.

From 2004 to 2006, Mr. Grimaud was the Chief Executive Officer of Genaco Biomedical Products, Inc., a molecular diagnostics company with proprietary multiplexing technology for infectious disease and cancer diagnostics.  In 2006, Mr. Grimaud led the sale of Genaco to global molecular diagnostics leader Qiagen (Nasdaq: QGEN). 

Michael R. Hayden, M.D., Ph.D., F.R.C.P.C.

Michael R. Hayden, M.D., Ph.D., F.R.C.P.C., has been a director of MBI since January 2010.  Dr. Hayden is a world-renowned geneticist and Professor of Medical Genetics at the University of British Columbia, as well as the Director of the Center for Molecular Medicine and Therapeutics in Vancouver.  Dr. Hayden focuses his research primarily on genetic diseases and predictive medicine and has authored over 600 peer-reviewed publications and invited submissions.

Dr. Hayden was a founder, director and Chief Medical Advisor of Aspreva Pharmaceuticals Corporation, a NASDAQ and Toronto Stock Exchange-listed company, which was acquired in 2007 by Galenica Group for US $915 million.  He is also a director and Chief Scientific Officer of Xenon Pharmaceuticals Inc., a privately-held biotechnology company. 

Dr. Hayden is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards and honors.  He was awarded the Order of British Columbia in 2009; Canada's Health Researcher of the Year: Canadian Institutes of Health Research Michael Smith Prize in Biomedical and Clinical Research in 2008; the Prix Galien Canada (Research) award in 2007; the Award of Excellence of the Genetics Society of Canada and the Ottawa Life Sciences Award of Merit in 2001; the BC Biotechnology Alliance Award for Vision and Leadership in 2000; and the Distinguished Scientist Award of the Canadian Society of Clinical Investigation in 1998. Furthermore, he was elected to the Royal Society of Canada in 1995, to the Board of the American Society of Human Genetics in 1994 and to the American Society of Clinical Investigation in 1992. 

Dr. Hayden holds an MD and PhD from the University of Cape Town, completed a post-doctoral fellowship and further training at Harvard Medical School and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Wilbert J. Keon, O.C. M.D., F.R.C.S.

Wilbert J. Keon, O.C. M.D., F.R.C.S.(C), has been a director of MBI since 2004. Dr. Keon was a practicing academic surgeon from 1969 to September 2001. He founded the University of Ottawa Heart Institute in 1969, where he was the Chief Executive Officer until 2004.

Dr. Keon was a professor and the chair of the University of Ottawa Department of Surgery for 15 years and was the first Canadian surgeon to implant a total artificial heart as a bridge to transplant.

Dr. Keon has held appointments and elected offices in 36 national and international professional associates including past-president of the Medical Research Council of Canada. Dr. Keon has been honoured by his profession with numerous awards, is an Officer of the Order of Canada and a Senator of the Parliament of Canada.

Dr. Keon holds a B.Sc. and an M.D. from the University of Ottawa; an M.Sc. from McGill University; an F.R.C.S.(C) (General Surgery) from the University of Toronto and an F.R.C.S.(C) (Cardiac Surgery) from Harvard University.

R. Hector MacKay-Dunn, Q.C.

R. Hector MacKay-Dunn, Q.C. has been MBI’s Corporate Secretary since 2005 and a director since August 2007. He is a senior partner at the Vancouver law firm Farris, Vaughan, Wills & Murphy LLP. Mr. MacKay-Dunn has over 25 years of experience advising senior public and early-stage private companies on corporate and general matters, complex domestic and cross-border public and private securities offerings, mergers and acquisitions and international partnering transactions.

Mr. MacKay-Dunn is recognized by LEXPERT American Lawyer Media (2005) as one of Canada’s Top 100 Corporate Lawyers in Canada-US Cross Border Transactions and is the sole British Columbia Leading Lawyer named in the field of Technology and Biotechnology. He is chair of the BC Innovation Council, a Provincial Crown Agency; a director of Genome British Columbia; and a member of the UBC Faculty of Science Dean’s Advisory Council and the Simon Fraser University Biotech Advisory Council. He was appointed Queen’s Counsel by the British Columbia Cabinet in 2003.

Mr. Mackay-Dunn holds a B.A. and LL.B. from the University of British Columbia.

Kevin K. Rooney, Esq.

Kevin K. Rooney has been a director of MBI since June 2009.  Mr. Rooney is a co-founding partner of Hayden Bergman Rooney, Professional Corporation, a corporate, securities and mergers and acquisitions boutique law firm in San Francisco that represents clients in the United States and Canada.  Mr. Rooney heads the firm’s public company practice.  Prior to that, Mr. Rooney was a corporate and securities attorney at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, Professional Corporation, in Palo Alto, California, and Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg LLP in Toronto. 

Mr. Rooney is an Adjunct Professor at the University of San Francisco School of Law teaching Corporate Transactions and an Adjunct Professor at the University of California Berkeley HAAS School of Business co-teaching Business Law (MBA).  Mr. Rooney is also a member of the TSX Venture Exchange Toronto Local Advisory Board, the Law Society of Upper Canada and The State Bar of California.

Mr. Rooney holds a B.A.Sc. (Honours Co-op) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Waterloo and an LL.B. from Dalhousie Law School.
